UNESCO Representative visits Northern Regional Minister

Mr Abdourahamane Diallo, Head of Office and Representative of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Ghana has called on the Northern Regional Minister at his office in Tamale to brief him on UNESCO’s interventions in the region.

Mr Diallo was accompanied by some staff members of UNESCO in Ghana, and representatives of NORSAAC, a civil society organisation based in Tamale.

The UNESCO representative mentioned education, cultural exchanges and freedom of expression and safety of journalists as some of UNESCO’s intervention areas in the region to promote development and assured the Regional Minister that the organisation would continue to do more in the region.

Prior to paying calling on the Regional Minister, Mr Diallo visited Zabzugu District in the region to monitor the Reproductive Health Education project being implemented by Norsaac with support from UNESCO.

Mr Diallo said, “We want to do more to contribute to address challenges in the region as part of the bigger United Nations family in a comprehensive manner.”

He said UNESCO was supporting an ICT education training for teachers in the region as a response to the country’s ICT education agenda and commended Ghana government for introducing the one-laptop per teacher initiative in the country to give laptops to teachers to enhance teaching and learning.

Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu, Northern Regional Minister, expressed appreciation to UNESCO for its interventions in the region and gave assurance of continued collaboration to ensure opportunities for the people while promoting development.

He expressed the hope that Mr Diallo’s visit would lead to further investment in the region for the benefit of the people.

Alhaji Issahaku lauded NORSAAC for the numerous interventions it had been implementing in the region and said they were productive in complementing the work of the Regional Coordinating Council in the areas of education at basic and second cycle levels to improve teaching and learning.
