Suspect in Awutu Beraku murder remanded
The suspect in the killing of a nine-year-old boy at Awutu Beraku in the Central Region has been remanded into police custody by the Ofaakor Magistrate Court.
Henry Opoku has been charged with murder and is to reappear in court on September 29, 2021.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Oduro Amaning however mentioned that the charges against the accused person may increase or reduce based on the outcome of the investigations.
The deceased was shot on Monday, August 30, 2021.
Two others were left in critical condition and sent to the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast for treatment.
The deceased was reportedly pushing his brother, who has a mobility disability, in a wheelchair when he was hit by a bullet and killed him instantly.
He is believed to have been shot by traditional authorities carrying out rituals to purify the community ahead of the Awutu Awubia festival.
Some residents, however, attributed the unfortunate incident to negligence on the side of the gun-wielding men.
The deceased is said to be the only son of his mother, according to an eyewitness Joe Mensa.
He said they were home when his aunt, the mother of the deceased, rushed in wailing “Oh, they have killed my son”.
The body has been deposited at the Winneba Special and Trauma Mortuary for Preservation and autopsy.
