Alan Kyerematen denies Suhum clash was between his supporters and Bawumia’s
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has condemned a clash at a funeral in Suhum in the Eastern Region that occurred among some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the weekend.
The clash, believed to have occurred between supporters of the Suhum Member of Parliament (MP), Kwadwo Asante, and a presidential staffer, Frank Asiedu Bekoe (a.k.a. Protozoa), led to two people sustaining injuries.
In a statement issued by Mr Kyerematen over the incident, he said, “I condemn without reservation this barbaric act of some members of our great party.”
He pointed out that under no circumstance should any disagreement, whether relating to a contest for position or differences in ideas and opinions, manifest in such a clash, as witnessed at Suhum on Saturday, August 28.
He emphasised that “the ideals of our party and tradition call for peaceful and harmonious coexistence and our motto, (development in freedom), has no place for violence.”
“I therefore urge the Suhum Constituency Executives, the Eastern Regional Executives as well as the National Executives of the party to take immediate steps to resolve the differences between the two feuding sides to restore peace and discipline in the party,” Mr Kyerematen said.
He also said allegations circulating on social media that, “the clash was between my supporters and those of our Vice President (Dr Mahamudu Bawumia) are not only completely false but mischievous”.
Suhum NDC calls for unity among NPP supporters
The Suhum Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the violent confrontations, saying, “we wish to bring to the notice of the NPP in Suhum and Ghana as a whole that the era of crude politics is over and this must stop.”
According to the Suhum branch of the NDC, there is disunity and fights among supporters of the NPP have brought to a standstill development in the municipality.
“We are by this release informing the NPP in Suhum that we the residents need our peace of mind to engage in our various trades, so we can take care of our families,” a statement by the party noted.
Background
The driver of the MP for Suhum, one Jamal Jamalo, allegedly inflicted knife wounds on a member of the communications team of the NPP in the region, Kwasi Amoani.
The incident occurred after supporters of the MP and of another person who is planning to unseat the lawmaker in the upcoming primaries of the party, engaged in a fight at the funeral ceremony.
The police said, the matter was reported to them and the complaint was subsequently taken to the Suhum government hospital where he was responding to treatment at the emergency ward.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh told journalists that investigations are underway.
