Bawumia, Chief Imam, donate towards construction of police station at Ejura

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, have donated cash and bags of cement to construct a police station at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

Dr Bawumia offered GH¢50,000 and 1,000 bags of cement, while the National Chief Imam presented GH¢2,000 and 500 bags of cement for the new structure.

The project is to resource the police to enhance security in the area in the wake of the recent violent clashes between some irate youth and security personnel, leading to the death of two people.

The donation was made when they visited three bereaved families to commiserate with them over the loss of their loved ones.

They were in the company of the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah.

Ibrahim Mohammed, aka Kaaka, 45, was killed last Monday by assailants who are currently on remand.

The other two, Nasiru Yussif and Murtala Mohammed, both 25, died the next day during a protest in seeking justice for Kaaka.

The delegation used the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the prevailing situation at Ejura and its immediate environs.

They also visited individuals who were injured after the military opened fire on protesters.

Dr Bawumia extended the government’s deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

He assured them that the government is resolute in investigating the circumstances that led to the deaths.

On his part, Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu advised the youth and affected families to exercise restraint as the government had commissioned a ministerial committee to probe the issue.

He also prayed for the souls of the deceased men.

Following rising concern over the incidents at Ejura, Minister for the Interior Ambrose Dery set a committee to investigate the matter, upon the instructions of President Dankwa Akufo-Addo,

The three-member committee is expected to present a report in 10-days.

The committee members are Professor Vladimir Antwi-Danso, international relations and security expert; George Kingsley Koomson, a judge in the Court of Appeal; and Juliet Amoah, a media-tech innovator.

Minority reaction

Reacting to the constitution of the committee, the Minority in Parliament said such a matter required a commission of inquiry rather than a ministerial probe.

“We will not accept any ministerial inquiry. We want an inquiry that has the true meaning of article 278 of the 1992 constitution,” Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said at a press conference on Wednesday, June 30.

According to him, an independent institution must conduct the investigations and not the Ministry of the Interior, which oversees the work of the Ghana Police Service.

“The state security cannot absorb themselves from the incident). The President must appoint a judge because, definitely, we will reject any recommendations from any ministerial inquiry,” he stated emphatically.
