Fire guts Accra Academy again

More than 20 students of Accra Academy Senior High School (SHS) at Kaneshie have lost their properties in a fire that ravaged their dormitory.

The properties include trunks, chop boxes, books, beds and mattresses and other valuables include money.

The Wednesday evening fire outbreak is said to have occurred around 7:00 pm from the ironing room of the school.

This makes it the second time the school has suffered a fire outbreak, having had a similar incident in January 2020.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has since doused the flames and commenced investigations into the accident.

The fire affected five dormitories, but no casualty was recorded, as the fire started when the students were studying at prep.

Addressing the media, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GNFS, Ellis Robinson Okoe, explained that the service received a distress call at about 7:46 pm that there was a fire outbreak at Accra Academy School.

“When we got here, we realised five of the dormitories are on fire. As I speak with you now, we have been able to bring the fire under control. There are little pockets of fire that we want to extinguish totally before we leave here.”

He said that three fire engines were used to bring the fire under control.

“We don’t have the cause of fire now, so we will investigate and get the cause of the fire,” he told the media.

In January last year, a late night fire consumed two halls at the school, displacing more than 100 students.

That fire also started around 7:00 p.m., affecting the Alema and Halm Addo halls when the students were attending prep.

This left affected students spending the night at other halls within the school until the necessary arrangements were made for them by the authorities.
