Support Small Businesses To Achieve Ghana Beyond Aid – CIMG Charges Marketers

Marketers have been entreated to support the government in realising the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda by helping Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The President of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana (CIMG) Dr Daniel Kasser Tee said this over the weekend when 104 new members were admitted into CIMG.

They consist of 27 full members, 60 associate members, 13 emerging associate members, one graduate member, one honorary member, and two corporate members.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Kasser Tee said that marketers owe an obligation to the country to provide the necessary support to the government in the quest to be independent.

“We can do this by helping the huge proportion of Ghanaian businesses, which were classified as MSMEs, and reported to be contributing some 70% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” he said.

“We can also do this by helping to modify the tastes and preference of Ghanaians in favour of Made-in-Ghana products and services,” he added.

He cautioned against the adulteration of the Ghanaian culture by adopting mannerisms, gestures, and other non-verbal cues during communications.

A situation, the marketing expert said, was fast eroding the cultural values of the country.

Dr Kasser Tee, therefore, called for increased patronage of local foods, drinks, clothes, and languages.

“This is how we can ensure a Ghana that is self-reliant,” he said.

He advised inductees to commence professional development immediately to attain Chartered Marketer status.

He explained that attaining such status within the marketing profession would propel them to the highest level of their career.

Dr Kasser Tee reminded the inductees that as they stepped into the corporate world, there were three absolute necessities they would require for success – the right mindset, digitalisation, and the use of technology and customisation.

Regarding the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana Act, 2020 (Act 1021), he indicated that following the coming into force of the Act, the institute had granted accreditation to seven universities and tuition centres to start marketing programmes from July.

This would enable the institutions to provide students with a minimum of three months of tuition and take their standard professional exams, the first of its kind, in September.

Act 1021 empowers the institute to set standards for marketing and regulate the marketing profession nationally.

By so doing, the institute is to provide training and conduct exams according to international best practices, improve skills and competencies of all persons working in and those who aspire to be in the field.

CIMG also advocates for responsible and ethical marketing practices for marketers and businesses and conducts innovative market research to develop the field.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana (CIMG) was founded in July 1981 with the vision to be the voice of marketing practice in Ghana under the Professional Bodies Registration Act 1973 (NRCD143).

The Institute aims at seeing organizations (both private and public) embrace the marketing concept and be marketing oriented in their operations.
