Ghana defender Daniel Amartey suffers racist abuse
Daniel Amartey suffered racist abuse on social media after he became the third Ghanaian to win the FA Cup after Leicester City conquered Chelsea in the final on Saturday.
The Ghana defender, who was left on the bench at Wembley, was at the receiving end of a number of abusive messages on Twitter, some of which was racial.
One message made reference to the death of former Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who was killed in a helicopter crash on 27 October 2018, the same day Amartey suffered a horrific injury that kept him out of action for nearly two years.
Amartey ‘angered’ Chelsea fans after he was captured throwing a Chelsea pennant over his shoulder and landed on the floor during Leicester City’s post-match celebrations in the dressing room.
A Twitter spokesman told Sky Sports News: “There is no room for racist abuse on Twitter and we are resolute in our commitment to ensure the football conversation on our service is safe for fans, players and everyone involved in the game.
“When we identify accounts that violate any of the Twitter Rules, we take enforcement action.
“We have proactively engaged and continue to collaborate with our valued partners in football to identify ways to tackle this issue collectively and will continue to play our part in curbing this unacceptable behaviour – both online and offline.”
This comes two weeks after clubs and various stakeholders in English football boycotted social media as a protest against racism.
