EC reviews Christmas break following criticisms

The Electoral Commission has reviewed its Christmas break saying senior staff would continue to work during the break.

In a press statement, the Commission said its senior staff would continue to work during the break to engage stakeholders.

“The senior leadership and some key operational staff of the commission will continue to work during the break” part of the statement read.

This review comes after sections of social media criticised the EC’s decision to take a 27-day break amidst controversy surrounding the 2020 general elections.

NDC North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called the EC’s announced break as an attempt by the commissioners to run away from their shadows.

The NDC has challenged the EC to produce the collated results of the Techiman South parliamentary elections which it claims it won.

Only a court can order a re-collation of the results. At the presidential level, the NDC could head to court to challenge the declaration of President Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner.

He won by more than 500,000 votes. But the NDC claims it has evidence of fraud.

Ghana last witnessed an election petition in 2012 when the NPP unsuccessfully challenged the declaration of John Mahama as the winner of that presidential election. Mahama won by 325,863 votes.

“The commission will be going on recess from the 23rd December 2020 to 19th January 2021.” part of the first statement signed by Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Bossman Asare, read.
