8 killed daily in road accidents in 1st half of 2025 – NSRA

Ghana continues to face a concerning increase in road traffic incidents as authorities record 7,289 road crashes between January and June 2025.

This was revealed in provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

These accidents resulted in the tragic loss of 1,504 lives in just six months.

The report further indicates that 12,354 vehicles were involved in these crashes, underscoring the widespread nature of the problem across the country.

On average, eight lives are lost every single day due to road accidents.

A total of 8,300 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries, with many likely to face long-term physical and emotional consequences.

Equally alarming is the toll on pedestrians.

The data shows that 1,301 people were knocked down by vehicles during this period, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced pedestrian safety measures in both urban and rural areas.

Each day sees approximately 40 separate road crashes, injuring about 46 people and involving an estimated 69 vehicles and motorcycles.

In response to the crisis, the NSRA has renewed its call for stronger enforcement of traffic regulations across the country.

The authority emphasised the need for a coordinated national effort to curb reckless driving, reduce speeding, and ensure strict compliance with road safety protocols.
