7 Things Princess Diana Was Allowed To Keep After Her Divorce

Lady Diana Spencer’s marriage to Prince Charles (now King Charles III) has been referred to as the wedding of the century by history. The wedding which took place on Wednesday, 29 July 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, United Kingdom suffered due to their incompatibility and extramarital affairs.

The Royal Couple separated in 1992 not too long after the breakdown of their marriage became public which facilitated their divorce in 1996.

Though it is reported that Princess Diana received 22 million pounds sterling in cash after the split, she had to give up lots of her royal privileges, including her right to become Queen but the Royal family allowed her some privileges and entitlements. Her Title

After her divorce, Lady Diana kept the right to be called Princess of Wales but lost another honor.

Despite the reports that the Late Queen Elizabeth wanted Diana to retain the right to be called Her Royal Highness, Prince Charles now King Charles III was adamant so she gave it up.

This meant that Princess Diana had to courtesy to other royal family members, including her children and Prince Charles himself.

Princess Diana still got a royal nod in her name. After the divorce, she was still allowed to be known as Diana, Princess of Wales.

 

Relationship With Her Sons

Princess Diana accepted Prince Charles’ divorce terms as they had to co-parent their children William and Harry.

Princess Diana was still involved in all decisions related to their children. When Diana got to have her kids at her home in Kensington Palace, she was known to let them eat foods like pizza, fried chicken, and potato skins which are considered unroyal. The boys also got to spend half their holidays with their mom.

Though Princess Diana was forced to vacate the office next to her Ex-husbands’ place she was allowed to keep her apartment at Kensington Palace. Princess Diana was offered space for her new office and $600,000 a year to maintain it. The property had three levels, including a nursery for her sons that took up the entire top floor.

 

Private Jets

Lady Diana didn’t have to return to flying business class just because she lost her “Her Royal Highness” title. She still had access to the royal family’s jets so she could keep traveling like a queen.

 

Her Jewelry Collections

Although Princess Diana got to keep most of the jewelry she had amassed during her marriage including her engagement ring, with which Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton. The only piece she had to return was the Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara that Queen Elizabeth II had passed down to her then-daughter-in-law as a wedding present. But now Duchess Kate is seen wearing it on special occasions.

 

Right To Visit Official Engagement

Despite the harsh divorce, Buckingham Palace stated that Princess Diana would still be considered a member of the royal family and from time to time received invitations to national public occasions.  Those were the only places where Princess Diana was given police protection as she had to hire private bodyguards to ensure her own safety.

Key Staff

Even though Princess Diana had to reduce her staff, she was made to keep some key home staff which included her chef, cleaner, and dresser, and her butler Paul Burrell who she described as the only man she ever trusted.

 

Party Space

Even though she had to give up her permanent office space at St. James’s Palace, Princess Diana could still access it from time to time. As long as she asked permission first, she was allowed to use apartments there for entertaining events.
