7 killed, several others critically injured in fatal Offinso–Abofuor highway crash

A road accident on the Offinso–Abofuor Highway in the Ashanti Region has left seven people dead and at least twelve others in critical condition.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, January 7, 2026, between the Samproso and Awisam communities near Offinso, according to eyewitnesses.

Speaking to the media, eyewitness Kwadwo Obeng Mireku said a commercial bus (registration number GT 5509-20) travelling from Techiman to Kumasi collided head-on with a cement-laden trailer (registration number GN 5326-22).

He explained that the trailer, which was transporting cement from a factory in Samproso, broke down on the road after developing engine trouble.

The oncoming bus, reportedly travelling at a high speed, crashed into the stationary trailer.

Six people died instantly at the scene, while several others sustained life-threatening injuries. One additional victim later died after being rushed to hospital, bringing the death toll to seven.

Both the injured and the deceased were taken to St. Patrick Hospital in Offinso Maase.

Police officers have since visited the scene to clear the road and have begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident.
