53 Nigerians arrested, 44 rescued in cybercrime operations

Security agencies have arrested 53 Nigerian nationals and rescued 44 others as a result of coordinated intelligence-led operations aimed at suspected cybercrime centres in various areas of Accra and its surroundings.

The operations, as reported by the Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Technologies, Sam George, took place on January 16 and 17, 2026, following intelligence collected by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) Ghana over a 48-hour timeframe, which pinpointed several sites where young men were reportedly being exploited and coerced by ringleaders to participate in cybercrime activities.

The suspected centres were situated in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

In response to the intelligence, a collaborative team consisting of operatives from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the National Police SWAT executed simultaneous raids at the identified locations.

During these operations, nine Nigerian nationals were detained as suspects believed to be significant participants in the cybercrime activities, while 44 other Nigerian nationals, deemed victims, were rescued.

The rescued individuals were discovered in apartments operating laptop computers.

Searches conducted at the various sites resulted in the recovery of 52 assorted mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

In total, 53 Nigerian nationals were arrested across the five locations, with 17 apprehended at Tuba, 11 at Afienya, 10 each at Kwabenya and Weija, and five at East Legon Hills.

All the detained individuals have been profiled and transferred to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations.

Security authorities have advised foreign nationals planning to travel to Ghana to independently verify claims made by their compatriots, cautioning that some individuals are enticed into the country under false pretences and subsequently exploited.
