48-year-old man jailed for damaging Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange
The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced 48-year-old head porter identified as Yaw Asare to two years imprisonment for unlawfully damaging components of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in Accra.
According to the prosecution, Asare was arrested on June 9, 2025, while actively destroying parapet beams and other features of the newly constructed interchange.
He faced charges of “causing unlawful damage” in violation of Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29).
In light of the verdict, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has raised an alarm over the increasing vandalism against public infrastructure.
“In recent times, the Ministry has observed with deep concern the rapid rate with which some members of the public cause unlawful damage to road infrastructure, including vandalism and vehicular crashes, especially those involving traffic lights,” a statement from the Ministry said.
Furthermore, they warned that such actions will not be tolerated.
“The public is reminded that causing unlawful damage to public infrastructure is an offence,” the statement added.
