A 40-year-old fisherman, Lotsu Godson, has drowned in the Volta River at Adidome in the Volta Region.
According to the Assembly Member of Adidome Central who is also a brother of the fisherman, Guggisberg Fiagbenu, his body was found on Monday, July 29, after being missing for three days.
He said his brother left the house suddenly and did not return, prompting the family to mount a search for him.
After three days of searching, his body was found floating on the Volta River.
The Assemblyman said the deceased was healthy and had no medical conditions, which could have led him to drown in the river.
“The police were notified, and the body was removed and taken to the morgue, but the experts there indicated that it was necessary we bury him as soon as possible.
“Our brother is an experienced fisherman and diver. He can dive and be underwater for many minutes. So, we’re all shocked but there’s nothing to do now. He’s gone,” Mr Fiagbenu said.
Meanwhile, the Adidome Police said they suspect no foul play following their assessment.
This is not the first incident in which a fisherman drowned in the Volta River.
According to his master, John Mensah, who is also a fisherman, the young man met his untimely death on his second attempt at fishing.
John Mensah said the deceased jumped into the river for their fishing nets and was not seen again.
A search team was later dispatched to look for his body.
The assemblyman of the area, Mohammed Ali, who joined the search party, said the group started searching right after the chief broke the news to them.
After several search attempts the matter was reported to the police and navy.
