Four military personnel have been arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal mining operations in the Tarkwa Nsuaem District of Ghana’s Western Region.

The arrests were carried out on Monday, August 18, 2025, during a joint operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

The task force seized weapons and equipment from the soldiers, who were found conducting unauthorised raids at Simpa Junction.

According to authorities, the suspects were acting under the pretence of representing national security.

Initial findings suggest that the soldiers are part of unofficial groups operating without clearance, raising concerns about the growing trend of illegal mining activities under the cover of state authority.

These operations have often disrupted communities and put legal mining businesses at risk.

The arrested individuals have been transferred to the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces at Apremdo.

Military officials are now investigating the case and are expected to take disciplinary action where necessary.

A representative from NAIMOS described the arrest as a crucial step toward restoring order.

“This action shows that no one is above the law. We are working to protect both the environment and those who follow the rules,” the official said.

The government has reiterated its dedication to curbing the environmental and economic damage caused by these unlawful activities.
