The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that 2,260 road crashes have claimed 369 lives in the first two months of the year.
Speaking at the launch of the 2024 Road Safety Easter Campaign, the Director-General of the NRSA, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, said the road crashes involved 3,910 vehicles, with 2,552 injuries and 381 pedestrian knockdowns.
“This is an increase of 0.49% for crashes, 1.37% for vehicles involved, and 2.0% for persons injured. Notably, persons killed/fatalities increased by 11.82%, all compared to the first two months in 2023,” Ing. Adonteng said.
For the same period last year, 2,249 cases were recorded involving 3,857 vehicles.
330 persons were killed, while 2,502 persons were injured and 382 pedestrian knockdowns were also recorded.
In January, 55% (631) of the crashes were minor, 33% (375) were serious crashes, and 12% (136) were fatal crashes out of the 1,142 crashes reported.
A total of 16 (9%) persons killed were below 18 years old, while 158 (91%) were reported to have been adults (above) 18 years old in January.
This indicates that for every ten (10) adults (above 18 years) killed, a child (below 18 years) is killed, revealing a relatively high road traffic death ratio (10:1) for adults than for children within the period.
This is partly due to the high risk of exposure of adults to traffic incidents as compared to children.
