An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 33-year-old carpenter to 2 years imprisonment for causing harm.
This comes after the convict, Kwasi Adu, pleaded guilty to the charge.
The facts of the case indicate that Isaac Afari, the complainant, is self-employed and works at Kantamanto while the accused, now convicted, was employed as a carpenter in the same area.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred when the convict was found sleeping in front of a shop owned by Madam Gifty Lamptey, a witness in the case, during the night.
When Mr. Afari asked Adu not to sleep there again, the convict became offended and attacked him.
On May 28, 2023, around 7:30 a.m., the complainant noticed the convict sleeping in front of the shop once more. Upon confrontation, Adu became more agitated and attacked Mr. Afari, leading to a heated altercation.
However, bystanders intervened and managed to calm the situation.
Subsequently, Mr. Afari left the scene and was on his way to purchase food when the convict chased after him in a fit of rage.
The prosecution said Adu then proceeded to stab the complainant three times in the back using a knife. After inflicting harm, he fled the scene, but he was swiftly pursued and apprehended by sympathetic individuals at the Railways Police Station.
The injured Mr. Afari was promptly rushed to Ussher Polyclinic for medical attention.
Following his treatment, he returned to the police station to lodge a formal complaint, after which he was issued a medical form.
In light of happenings, Kwasi Adu pleaded guilty to the charges.
The trial judge, Isaac Addo, taking into account the severity of the offense, handed down a sentence of 2 years imprisonment to serve as a deterrent and ensure justice for the victim.
