32 nurses and midwives in Ghana infected with COVID-19

More than 30 nurses and midwives in the country have been infected with the deadly coronavirus, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has confirmed.

President of the association, Perpertual Ofori Ampofo, indicated that 250 of them have been asked to go under mandatory quarantine.

“So far, we have 32 confirmed cases and 250 of them under quarantine. The coronavirus has showed that as individuals, we are all at high risk and must be conscious of the environment.

“When you visit the hospital, it is difficult to confirm who has the virus just by looking at them. You cannot tell if someone has the virus or not, bearing in mind people who do not show any symptom of the virus,” she said in an interview with CitiNews.

She further urged the general public to adhere to all the safety protocols advised by the Ghana Health Service and avoid stigmatizing recovered COVID-19 patients.

“We must treat people fairly, treat them the way we would want to be treated. If it were any of your family members who has been infected, would you shun them or run away from them, she quizzed.

As of May 14, Ghana’s coronavirus cases stood at 5,530 with 674 recoveries and 26 deaths.

Greater Accra remains the region with the highest number of cases with a record of 4,204, followed by Ashanti and Central Region with 788 and 192 cases respectively.

Regions with confirmed cases of COVID-19 includes, Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Western, Western North, Volta, Upper East, Oti, Upper West, Northern, North East and Bono.

Savannah, Ahafo and Bono East have no record of COVID-19 cases.
