30 doctors, nurses infected with COVID 19 in the Ashanti Region
Some thirty health workers, including doctors and nurses in the Ashanti Region, have been infected with the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.
The Regional Health Director, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang, revealed this at a news conference today, Wednesday, April 20.
“We have a total of 30 health workers, having COVID-19 in the region. Out of the total of 43 districts in the Ashanti Region, 25 districts and municipals have reported COVID-19 cases,” he said.
According to the Health Director, all the infected health workers were responding to treatment. He, however, added that the region’s epicentre, Obuasi which contributed to about 80% of infections in the Ashanti Region had started recording a decline in its cases.
“The major challenge we had in the Ashanti Region was the situation of Obuasi. As of now, Obuasi Municipality has reported 381 and Obuasi East reported 206 cases. As of April 19, there were only nine cases in Obuasi. However, within a period of one week, that is, from Tuesday, April 21 to Monday, April 21, an additional 300 infections were recorded.”
The spike in the number of COVID-19 cases sparked discussions of a possible lockdown of the Obuasi municipality, but the Regional minister has downplayed that suggestion and noted all the necessary measures had been taken to avert further spread of the disease in the Municipality.
So far, the Ashanti Region has recorded 885 coronavirus infections with seven deaths since the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic in Ghana. 74 others have also recovered fully and discharged to their various homes.
Ghana’s total case count increased to 6,096 from an earlier 5,918 in less than 24 hours. The new figure means 178 new cases were detected.
The latest update was contained in a publication on the website of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Nineteen more people were declared COVID-19-free bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,773. The death toll, however, stands at 31.
