3 Supreme Court nominees to face Appointments C’tee on Wednesday, Dec. 20
Parliament will on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, vet three nominees appointed by the President to fill vacant positions on the Supreme Court bench.
The president, in a letter to the house, nominated Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, Justice Yaw Darko Asare, and Justice Richard Adjei-Frimpong for elevation to the Supreme Court.
They are currently serving on the Court of Appeal.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted in the letter the importance of promptly filling the vacancies caused by the mandatory retirements of Justice Nene Abayateye Ofoe Amegatcher, Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah and Justice Jones Dotse.
There are now 13 Justices of the Court including the new Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
The nominations were made by the President in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, subject to the advice of the Judicial Council and in consultations with the Council of State.
Meanwhile, the Appointments Committee, chaired by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, will oversee the vetting of Supreme Court nominees and submit a report to the plenary for consideration.
