Three students in court for assaulting a prison officer have been granted GH¢60k bail.
Emmanuel Atitso, 20, Innocent Owusu, 18 and Godsway Lumorvi, were hauled before the Adentan Circuit Court.
The trio assaulted the officer, Stephen Nartey, during the recent voter exhibition exercise at the West African Senior High School in Adenta.
According to the prosecution, on August 21, 2024, around 4:00 pm, Nartey and his colleagues were standing about 70 metres from the exhibition centre, observing a school cadet rehearsal, when the incident occurred.
The complainant, officer Nartey, suddenly started coughing due to a substance sprayed in the air.
Upon investigation, he observed that Atitso was holding pepper spray and demonstrating it on a 10-year-old boy nearby.
When officer Nartey confronted Atitso and attempted to confiscate the pepper spray, Atitso resisted and punched the officer in the face.
Although two of Nartey’s colleagues attempted to calm the situation, Owusu, Lumorvi, and other cadet members intervened, overpowering the officers.
In the scuffle, Owusu also punched Nartey, helping Atitso escape from the scene.
Lumorvi then picked up a stick and, along with Owusu and other students, attacked the officers on duty.
The Adenta Police Patrol Team was called to the scene, which led to Owusu and Lumorvi’s apprehension.
The police later arrested Atitso.
