3 Opposition MPs In Ghana At Variance With Each Other About Ecowas & Niger
The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga who is also serving in the Ecowas parliament in Abuja, Nigeria has stated that Ecowas is left with no option but to mobilize and enter Niger the military style since the junta has turned down all diplomatic overtures.
He said Ecowas has the military muscle to flush out the coup makers and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum.
According to the Ghanaian lawmaker, the stance taken by Ecowas is one that upholds values such as democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights, and good governance.
Treading a middle ground is the MP for North Tongu, Okudzeto Ablakwa who is countenancing the Ghanaian government with an askance. He said the government cannot take unilateral action by adopting the Ecowas military option on Niger without recourse to parliament for representatives of the electorate to take a decision on the matter.
”Soldiers are not going for a tea party….they are not going to present a bouquet……they could be killed….we are facing challenges in our economy, where is the President going to get the money to deploy troops?”
The tough-talking Okudzeto Ablakwa said when Nigeria’s leader Bola Tinubu took the decision to use force on Niger, the legislators backed out of it, halting such inclinations.
On the extreme side of the thought equation is the lawmaker for Builsa North, James Agalga. He is categorical and cocksure parliament will decline the move by the executive to go with Ecowas’ directive on military deployment to attack the junta in Niger.
He is of the opinion that the military option could prove costly in terms of casualties on both sides, including endangering the life of President Bazoum. To him, all diplomatic options are available for an amicable solution.
The first position looks like a personal principle or assimilative of the acoustics in Abuja. The second looks like a snare within the democratic order. The third offer is a diametrical opposition.
