3 dead after ‘sleepy’ ‘trotro’ driver crashes car

Three persons have died after a ghastly accident at Asseseso, a community in the Okere district of the Eastern Region.

The accident involving a Toyota minibus with registration number GT 5990-21 occurred on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, while the vehicle was travelling from Accra to Somanya.

According to reports, the driver began to doze off while behind the wheel.

Some concerned passengers noticed the driver’s condition and requested that he should park the vehicle to get some rest.

Despite the driver’s efforts to stay awake, he allegedly lost control of the vehicle upon reaching Asseseso, resulting in an accident.

Two out of the 14 passengers died on the spot, while the other succumbed to his injuries while on admission at the Yilo Krobo Government Hospital.

The driver got critically injured and was rushed to the Atua Government Hospital in Odumase.

The other passengers were also rushed to the Yilo Krobo Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, five of the victims were transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua for advanced care due to severe head injuries, a spine injury and broken legs.

The remaining five patients are reportedly responding well to treatment, with one expected to be discharged soon.

In another fatal accident in the Ashanti Region involving a mini commercial bus at Sokoban, two persons lost their lives.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the bus suffered a brake failure and rammed into another bus.

One of the deceased was a middle-aged woman who attempted to escape the accident by rushing out of the car.

The vehicle overturned and crushed her.

The other victim, a lady, was rushed to the hospital but lost her life.

Five other passengers who were on board the vehicle were also injured and rushed to the hospital.
