Three Chinese illegal miners have allegedly gunned down a Ghanaian at Dompim, close to the Bonsa river in the Western Region.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be made public.

Initial reports suggest that the deceased was part of a group of young men who had gone to the mining site for their proceeds.

Upon seeing them on site, the miners allegedly shot him and he died on the spot.

The police have given the names of the suspects as Wen Jianhua, Yu Shuhui alias Eli and Zhou Daquan.

The body of the deceased has since been retrieved for preservation and autopsy.

Initial search conducted at the residence of the suspects also led to the retrieval of the murder weapon.

Meanwhile, investigations are still ongoing to ascertain what led to the death of the young fellow.

Over the years, the country has been plagued with the menace of illegal mining, known in local parlance as “Galamsey”. It has become a major national development challenge that many governments have grappled with over the years.

Polluted water bodies like River Pra are still looking brownish with residues of cyanide. Some areas of the country initially covered by thick vegetation have become bare.

Apart from depriving the country of its natural resources, in some cases, the illegal miners, mostly Chinese, have had violent confrontations with residents of communities leading to the loss of lives and properties.
