29 persons prosecuted for assaulting police

Some 29 accused persons have been hauled before the Tema Circuit Court for assaulting three police officers at Luhuor, a community near Sege in the Ada West District.

The police officers were responding to a distress call at ElectroChem Ghana Limited on October 21, when they were attacked by some community members.

A statement from the police said the suspects who blocked the road leading to the company also seized a weapon and ammunition from the officers.

“Some of the suspects took the police officers hostage for more than three hours and assaulted them. They later seized the Riot Control Weapon and destroyed a Toyota vehicle belonging to the Service,” the statement noted.

Following the incident, the Ada Divisional Police Command embarked on an operation in Luhuor on Friday, 22 October 2021, to arrest the perpetrators involved in the attack and retrieve the weapon and cartridges.

“During the operation, 36 suspects were arrested and screened, after which 29 were sent to court yesterday for trial. The police have retrieved the weapon and the box of cartridges,” it added.

The police said they would not hesitate to arrest persons involved in incidents of this nature whiles condemning the attack.

“The Police Administration condemns criminal conduct, and we wish to strongly caution the public to desist from attacking any individual or group, particularly any Law Enforcement Agent or risk being arrested and prosecuted.”
