2024 Polls: The Battle Of Tattoos

Source The Ghana Report

Tattoos, which used to be a popular Western culture, seem to be gaining roots in Ghana, especially among the youth.

Footballers, musicians, and other celebrities are the pacesetters in this regard.

Most of these celebrities do not really have a problem showing off these tattoos even though most Ghanaians have reservations about them, with many reading different meanings into them.

The word ‘tattoo’ can be traced as far as the 18th century. It is derived from the Polynesian word ‘tatu’ meaning “to write”. Tattooing has been practiced across the globe since Neolithic times as evidenced by ancient art, and archaeological records. In China, for instance, tattoos were considered a barbaric practice and were referred to in the literature as depicting bandits and folk heroes. In some other cultures, tattoos show how a person feels about a relative or symbol.

Usually, people with tattoos are confronted with negative perceptions including being called gangsters, and thieves, among other things.

People tattoo themselves for varied reasons, including aesthetic values, cosmetic effects, sentimental reasons, group identity, and religion.

Lately, tattoos seem to have gained firm ground in our Ghanaian politics as some supporters of political parties take up the trend of tattooing pictures of their favorite candidates on their bodies for solidarity.

Lady tattoos Kennedy Agyapong’s Image On Her Body

A young lady affectionately called Sasha White was recently trending after inking a tattoo of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, one of the presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on her back.

The lady believed to be a resident of Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom, fully supports Kennedy Agyapong and wants him to be the president of Ghana.

Mr. Agyapong is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Assin Central Constituency and is vying for the flagbearer position for the NPP in the upcoming 2024 general election.

According to Sasha White, the decision is mainly due to her love for Mr. Agyapong, his record in seeking the welfare of the Ghanaian youth and the grassroots of the NPP, and the promising potential of a presidency led by the MP.

“People do not understand why I say I am for Ken. First of all, he is there for the youth. Two, he thinks about delegates and the grassroots,” she stated.

She thinks Kennedy Agyapong is the only preferred candidate to help the NPP retain power in the 2024 election as the party seeks to break the eight.

Mahama fanatic gets a big tattoo of the Ex-President’s face on her back

In a run-up to the 2020 general elections, a Ghanaian lady was in the news after she tattooed the face of the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, on her back.

The unidentified lady leaked a photo of herself with her bare back facing the camera.

The lady boldly inked the face of John Mahama on her back and wrote 2020 beneath to seal the message as to mean Mahama will win the 2020 election.

It is, however, unclear if the artwork displayed on the lady’s back is permanent ink in the form of a tattoo or just a temporary drawing.
