The Ledzokuku constituency in the Greater Accra Region remains one of the most interesting constituencies since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
Known for its active civic engagement and political shifts, it is frequently described as a swing constituency.
It has a voter population of more than 142,000 spread across 12 electoral areas.
The areas are: West Akromadeokpo, East Akromadeokpo, Nii Ashitey Akomfra, Okesekor, Aborle-Bu, Sutsurunor, Agblesan, Tsuibleoo South, Tsuibleoo Central, Tsuibleoo North, South Teshie Nungua Estate, and North Teshie Nungua Estate.
The constituency also shares boundaries with Tema West, Krowor, and La Dade Kotopon.
With barely three months until the 2024 general election, the Ledzokuku Constituency is buzzing with political activities.
Supporters of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are making their voices heard, discussing the performances of their respective parliamentary candidates.
Although the Ledzokuku Constituency is known for its strong support for presidential candidates of the NDC, it also has a remarkable record of electing new Members of Parliament in every election since 1996.
During the 2000 general election, the NDC’s incumbent MP, Nii Adjei Boye Sekan, was replaced by the NPP’s Edith Akita, who lost the 2004 election to Dr. Gladys Norley Ashitey, also from the NPP.
The former Deputy Minister of Sports, Nii Nortey Dua, beat Dr. Ashitey in the 2008 general elections to reclaim the seat for the NDC.
He, however, lost the party’s primaries to Belinda Sena Okity Duah, who went on to become the MP in the 2012 general election.
Like her predecessors, Sena Okity also lost the 2016 election to the NPP’s Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye.
In a shocking turn of events, the NDC’s Benjamin Ayiku Narteh, a businessman, dethroned Dr. Okoe Boye in the 2020 election, who had been tipped to break the one-term jinx.
As the election approaches, residents are preparing for another intense battle for their votes.
The incumbent MP, Benjamin Narteh Ayiku, will face a rematch with the former MP and current Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Oko Boye.
Supporters of Mr. Ayiku Narteh are confident, highlighting his achievements, particularly in health and education. They believe that the incumbent MP is the candidate to break the constituency’s one-term jinx.
Mr. Ayiku Narteh’s campaign is focused on continuity and building on his accomplishments over the past term.
On the other hand, his contender, Dr. Okoe Boye, who has been considered one of the fastest-rising politicians, emphasises his previous contributions to the community and aims to reclaim the Ledzokuku seat.
Will the constituents continue their tradition of changing their MPs, or will they make history by re-electing Mr. Ayiku?
The fate of the two will be decided at the polls on December 7.
