2024 FIFA U20 WWC: Ghana on brink of elimination after 4-1 defeat to Japan
Ghana’s U20 women’s team, the Black Princesses, face a potential first-round elimination from the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a devastating 4-1 defeat to Japan in Group E on Thursday.
The team conceded two crucial goals in the final minutes of the game, sealing their fate.
Japan took control with a 45th-minute goal from Chinari Sasai, followed by Manaka Matsukubo’s injury-time strike before halftime.
After the break, Miku Hayama extended Japan’s lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute.
Although captain Stella Nyamekye scored a consolation goal in the 83rd minute, Miyu Matsunaga’s 90th-minute goal restored Japan’s three-goal advantage, leaving Ghana’s tournament hopes hanging by a thread.
The Black Princesses will face New Zealand in the final group game on Sunday, September 8, at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium, Cali.
