Ghana’s 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start in Colombia, as the Black Princesses suffered a 2-1 defeat to Austria in their Group E opener on Monday, September 2, 2024.
The team conceded goals in both halves, including a penalty in the second half against the tournament debutants.
Stella Nyamekye scored a consolation goal for the Princesses in the 91st minute after falling two goals behind.
Austria took the lead in the 12th minute through Hannah Fankhausser, and doubled their advantage in the 71st minute with a penalty kick, converted by Nicole Ojukwu, after Asana Alhassan committed a foul inside the box.
Despite a late surge from Ghana, including a stoppage-time goal from skipper Stella Nyamekye, Austria held firm to secure a 2-1 victory.
The Black Princesses will look to bounce back from their opening loss when they meet Japan on September 5th in their second group stage match.
Their final group game will come against New Zealand on September 8th.
