Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has said that the failure of the Electoral Commission (EC) to audit the voter register poses a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
According to him, the Jean-Mensa-led commission will be liable if Ghana’s democracy is destroyed.
“We will hold Jean Mensa solely responsible should anything happen to Ghana’s democracy.
“Jean Mensa, don’t throw our beloved country Ghana into chaos and situation you will run away from,” he said on TV3 on Sunday, September 22.
He added, “What is this holier than thou attitude the EC Chair is projecting, the Commission is only relevant so far as it’s still serving the citizens.”
Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) embarked on a nationwide protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) on September 17, 2024.
The anomalies were identified after the EC released the provisional voters register to the NDC and other political parties contesting in the 2024 election.
The NDC is calling for a forensic audit of the register, which it said will enhance the credibility of the upcoming general elections.
However, the EC insists that there is no need for a forensic audit as the issues the NDC is raising are normal occurrences that will be resolved before election day.
