The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa has disclosed that the commission will not create new polling stations ahead of the 2024 general elections.

She revealed this while addressing Parliament on Friday, July 19, 2024.

Madam Mensa appeared before the house to provide a crucial update on preparations for the December polls following a request from Members of Parliament(MPs) seeking clarity on the EC’s preparedness.

The address delved into various facets of the EC’s preparations, encompassing logistical arrangements, voter registration updates, and measures to ensure a credible electoral process.

The EC boss told the house that the commission does not intend to create new polling stations for the elections.

Instead, she said certain polling stations would be split into two or three to accommodate the number of voters on the register.

“We will not create new polling stations. However, there will be splits. Because we have increased the register, there will be split stations, A and B in the same venue. And our threshold is 700,” she said.

The EC currently has 33,367 polling stations across the country to cater to over 17 million voters.
