The police have arrested two teachers for engaging in examination malpractice in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the Dunkwa Secondary Technical Centre in the Central Region.
The suspects are Albert Adu-Gyan and Yaw Adadai, both teachers in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality.
According to a statement by the police, they were arrested on Monday, August 7, 2023, when they attempted to smuggle some solved examination questions to candidates into the examination hall.
“Items retrieved from the two suspects include two mobile phones and solved questions on two separate papers,” the statement said.
The police also cautioned the public against all forms of examination malpractice.
“We would like to caution the public against indulging in examination malpractices in the ongoing BECE as the police will arrest any persons found involved in such practices.”
The suspects are in custody and will be arraigned.
Meanwhile, Mr John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at West African Examinations Council(WAEC), said two other suspects were arrested in the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions, respectively.
“One individual was apprehended in the Ashanti region while attempting to enter the examination hall with prepared materials for the candidates.
“In Tema Central, a female individual was taken into custody for possessing a tablet containing information intended to be communicated to candidates,” Mr Kpabi detailed.
He emphasized that the arrested individuals had violated WAEC’s examination rules.
Over 600,000 students started the annual exams on Monday, August 7, 2023.
They will be done with their last paper on Friday, August 11.
They include 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 schools nationwide.
