2023 African Games: Facilities for games cost over $195 million – Sports Minister
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has disclosed that the facilities to host the 2023 African Games cost over $195 million.
Speaking at a press briefing on March 4 to provide updates ahead of the commencement of the games, Mustapha Ussif detailed the amount spent to ensure the availability of the facilities mentioned above.
The Borteyman Sports Complex, the University of Ghana Stadium and the Games Village are the major venues to host the competition, with the government funding the construction and completion of these facilities.
“The funding of the projects, relating to the provision of facilities for the hosting and organisation of the Games, was good as all the contractors have been paid,” he said.
“The total contract sum for provision of facilities for the Games, approved by this August House, amounted to $195,2555,153.74.”
According to the breakdown he provided, Borteyman, which was constructed by Contracta Construction UK Limited, cost $145, 086,057.54; Consar Limited’s University of Ghana Stadium cost $34,102,13; while the Games Village, given to Mawums Limited, was constructed at $16,066,961.20.
It is the first time Ghana is hosting the multi-sports event at Games Village, Borteyman Sports Complex and Legon Stadium.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for March 8, 2024.
