2022/23 Season: Top Ghanaian Players Facing Relegation Across Europe

Source The Ghana Report

As the 2022/23 football season draws to a close, some Ghanaian players could see themselves competing in the second-tier leagues next season in the countries in Europe where they ply their trade.

These players are facing relegation at their respective clubs in Europe.

While for some, fortunes could turn over in the coming weeks, some are bracing themselves for demotion and are already looking forward to some top clashes next season against lower-tier sides.

TGR Sports takes a look at Ghanaians facing the threat of demotion with regard to their current position on the league table.

Andre Dede Ayew made a move back to England in January when he joined Nottingham Forest as a free agent after parting ways with Qatari champions Al Sadd.

Ayew’s return to the Premier League has not been exciting as his club continues to enjoy a torrid campaign, losing 17 games out of 32 and recording just six wins in the English top flight.

The team is currently in the relegation drop, with six matches to end the 2022/23 season.

The Black Stars forward will be hoping for a miraculous turn of events in the remaining matches to avoid being relegated to the championship, where he last played during his time in England.

Following his £24.6m move from Rennes to Southampton, Kamaldeen Sulemana had been tipped to light up the Premier League with his speed and dribbling skills.

However, the current position of his club on the Premier League log will suggest a reconsideration of his impact at the championship.

Sulemana, who is yet to score for the Saints, will be hoping for good results from the upcoming fixtures and a slip by clubs like Leicester City, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Southampton will also face Nottingham Forest away in game week 35.

The woes of Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu continue to hover as the 23-year-old has been relegated to the bench under interim coach Ruben Selles, who replaced him with Nathan Jones.

Salisu has played just once under the new boss, without starting, with reports on why the player has been left out of recent matchday ranging from doubts over his commitment to injuries.

Even though he is unlikely to extend his deal at the club, which expires in June 2024, Salisu, like his compatriot Sulemana, will still be hoping to finish the season with the Saints still in the Premiership.

Daniel Amartey

Amartey and his 2016 Premier League winner Leicester City could be on their way to championship football after eight seasons at the top flight.

The defender and his outfit could be out of the relegation zone now, but the fight is not over because a failure to keep up momentum will result in a drop back to the zone.

The Foxes ended their nine-game winless run in the Premier League (D1 L8) with a victory against Wolves in the last match, lifting themselves out of the relegation zone.

Andy Yiadom

Reading FC captain Andy Yiadom is facing a tough test as he continues to fight with his club to avoid being relegated from the English Championship.

The Royals, docked six points following a breach of the English Football League’s financial rules, have slipped into the Championship relegation zone for the first time since the season’s opening day following a winless run of matches after.

Yiadom will be hoping for the maximum points in the last two games to secure a place for the next season.

Baba Rahman

The 28-year-old loanee from Chelsea, Baba Rahman, could end up not saving Reading FC from being relegated from the second tier of English football.

Rahman, who is currently injured, is a teammate of Andy Yiadom.

They play in the wing-back positions at the club.

The duo could be on their way to League One should they fail to record positive results from the final two games of the season.

Afena-Gyan, in August 2022, joined newly-promoted Serie A club Cremonese on a permanent deal.

The youngster has made 18 appearances for the club this season but has yet to score for the side in the Serie A.

The club could return to the second tier as the 2022/23 season rounds up with few matches left.

The Tigers, with only three wins all season, are in the relegation zone and likely to make a return to Serie B after just a season at the Italian top flight.
