2020 polls: Politicians the biggest losers if there is violence – Akufo-Addo
President Nana Akufo-Addo has charged politicians to ensure a peaceful process in the December 7 elections because they would be the biggest losers in case of any violence.
President Akufo-Addo, who signed a peace pact together with his rival, flagbearer of the NDC former President John Dramani Mahama said it was the third time he was participating in the exercise.
He said he upheld his commitment on the previous occasions and he will do the same as president.
According to him, the NPP has been a champion of peace and win disputes based on “superior arguments and not by violence.
“We believe in elections. We’ve always done,” he insisted.
He said the NPP can safely claim without contradiction that “every improvement that has brought more widespread credibility of our electoral processes has been at our instigation”.
He believes in an electoral process in which the loses would feel that they have been in a fair fight and would willingly congratulate the winners.
Mr. Akufo-Addo maintained, “We in the NPP want a credible election”.
He said the NPP has a track record that will make Ghanaians to renew the government’s mandate on Monday, just as it was in 2016.
Akufo-Addo condemns media for publishing false information
At the Movenpick Hotel on Friday, December 4, where the event was held, President Akufo-Addo vented his displeasure about the circulation of fake news.
“It does not help that a reputable media organisation puts out a totally false story that the EC has been caught with illegally printed ballots,” he criticised.
“If we are concerned about peace, such media outlets should be condemned by all. Such deliberate malice heightens the tension and incites passion unnecessarily,” he stressed.
There were reports of the Electoral Commission (EC) destroying some ballot papers which the EC clarified.
