The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set an objective of increasing the number of seats it holds in Ghana’s Parliament from 169 to 200 in the 2020 polls.
“We want to see that unity amongst all of us to ensure that we increase our parliamentary seats not only from 169 but we will be able to hit 200 seats in 2020,” the party’s General Secretary, Mr John Boadu told cheering supporters on Sunday.
Speaking at the 2019 National Delegates Conference of the party at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre at La in Accra, the NPP General Secretary rallied party members to join forces in harmony to ensure a resounding victory in the 2020 Parliamentary and Presidential polls.
Mr Boadu may be speaking to a trend that shows that in the Fourth Republic, the ruling government always won extra seats in its second term.
Currently, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has 106 seats forming the Minority in parliament. Ghana’s legislature is presently filled with members from only the two main political parties – NPP and NDC – out of a total of 24 political parties in the books of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.
The party has scheduled April 25, 2019, to hold its primaries to elect a flagbearer to battle Mr John Dramani Mahama of the NDC as well as parliamentary candidates for next year’s polls.
Mr Boadu was confident that the party will resolve all internal conflicts ahead of the elections.
“As we move into 2020, we believe strongly that some of these simmering problems that we hear, we will be able to tackle them upfront…”
