Twenty illegal sand winners have been arrested in several communities in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

They were arrested in a joint Military and Police operation led by the Ga South Security Council on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

The suspects were picked up from Obom, Domeabra, Ashalaja and Kofi Kwei and other communities in the same municipality.

They had reportedly leveled and destroyed farmlands in the process of winning sand illegally.

Joseph Nyarni, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ga South Municipality, told the media that the operation was carried out following a tip-off from some concerned residents in the communities.

He said the operations will continue in order to apprehend all culprits involved in the illegality.

Mr Nyarni added that the arrested suspects will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, Assembly Member for Oduman-Soaba Electoral Area, Charles Teye, says the sand-winning activities are having adverse effects on members of the communities.

He said such activities are gradually destroying their roads and exposing them to flooding.

Mr. Teye said his life is in danger after he exposed the sand winners to the Assembly.

He, therefore, called for the appropriate security agencies to provide protection for him.
