Two officers of the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFD) have been injured while on duty at East Tanokrom in Takoradi on Saturday, January 14, 2023.
The firefighters, with the Apramdo Fire Station in the Western Region, were dousing a fire outbreak in a single dual-use structure containing two rooms.
The structure doubles as a residence and electronic service workshop.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 10 pm.
GNFS was informed at 11:28 pm and it was far advanced when the officers rushed to the scene.
A statement from the GNFS on Tuesday said “the flame-bathed single dual-use structure eventually gave in as a result of the protracted intense heat it suffered and collapsed on the duo front line Firefighters, crashing their helmets and injuring them on their heads, upper and lower limbs.”
“The two Firefighters were initially sent to the Kwesimintsim Polyclinic for medical treatment,” the statement said.
One of the men was treated, discharged and is recuperating well.
However, “The other Firefighter who was in critical condition was transported from the Effia Nkwanta Hospital to the 37 Military Hospital for further medical treatment yesterday, Monday, January 16, 2023.”
Meanwhile, the GNFS said the cause of the fire that destroyed the structure and its content completely is not yet known.
The GNFS has, however, launched investigations into the incident.
