The Ngleshie Amanfro District Police have arrested two persons for allegedly selling protected lands in the buffer zones of the Densu River.
The river’s buffer zone is a designated protected area that can only be used for agriculture.
According to the police, the two, who also engaged in land guard activities, destroyed a commercial farm at Tomefa, a suburb of Ngleshie Amanfro.
Narrating the incident to journalists, one of the workers present on the farm said the suspects seized their phones and deleted videos they captured of the attack.
“We were working, and all of a sudden, we noticed that some individuals purported to be landguards invaded the land. They asked us to stop working. I approached one of them, and he told me not to try anything funny.
“He told me he would shoot and kill anyone who attempts to do anything funny. We later left the site because we were afraid. They ceased our phones since we had some videos. They took the phone and deleted the videos,” the farm worker said.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in the coming days.
The activities of landguards have been on the rise in many areas in the southern part of Ghana.
The gun-toting individuals are noted to terrorise property owners, with many reports indicating fierce battles with the police.
In one of the incidents, five suspected land guards were shot, and five weapons were recovered in an anti-robbery and land guard operation conducted at Bortianor in Accra on June 8, 2023.
In a statement signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Director of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi noted the individuals had been terrorising residents and landowners in Bortianor and nearby communities.
According to the police, the suspects, who were hiding, initiated gunfire as a police team approached, leading to an exchange of fire.
Consequently, five suspects sustained injuries and were later pronounced dead at the hospital. The remaining suspects managed to escape.
