The police have arrested 18 people over disturbances on University of Ghana campus.
A statement from the police said the 18 suspects were arrested on Tuesday, 14th February 2023.
According to the statement, the suspects were together with about 200 others believed to be former members of the Commonwealth Hall of the university.
“The suspects are currently in custody and will be put before the court to face justice.
“The Police have been able to contain the situation and calm has since been restored,” the police added.
Security has since been tightened on the campus for academic activities to continue without any hindrance.
The police further assured that all others involved in the disruptions will be brought to book.
This comes after some students of the university tussled with some heavily armed police officers at the entrance of the Commonwealth Hall.
Security personnel at the forecourt of the Commonwealth Hall had prevented some aggrieved former occupants as they tried to make entry into the hall.
The students insisted they had secured an interlocutory injunction to reside in the hall and therefore faced the police in a heated confrontation.
This was on the back of the university management’s new residential policy indicating that continuing students are supposed to occupy other halls apart from the Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah halls.
