The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed a significant update on voter registration, with 778,447 new voters registered during the recent limited registration exercise.

This brings the total number of valid voters on the roll to over 18.6 million.

This update was provided by the EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa, during a briefing to Parliament on preparations for the upcoming December 7 elections on Friday, July 19.

Madam Jean Mensa also revealed that a mop-up exercise is scheduled to take place from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3.

This exercise will be held at all district offices, including the newly established Guan District, to ensure that all eligible voters are registered.

In response to challenges from the recent limited voter registration, the Electoral Commission has rescheduled the voter exhibition exercise to August.

This move aims to accommodate a mop-up period and address issues like violence linked to the guarantor system, which witnessed individuals being bused to registration centres.

Looking forward, the EC proposes advocating for the Ghana Card as the sole ID for voter registration to streamline the process and bolster security measures.

Moreover, the Commission has recruited and trained 210,000 officials to ensure effective operations.

She highlighted the importance of having comprehensive data on all staff, which will improve management and coordination throughout the electoral process.
