After a disappointing opening day of the competition following the official opening ceremony of the 13th African Games with no medal won, Ghana has surged up the medal standings.
13th African Games host nation Ghana had a successful run on the second day of competition winning four medals (combined) in weightlifting and swimming.
Winnifred Ntumi was primarily responsible for the surge in medal wins for the first-time hosts as she ended the day winning three medals.
Ntummi won a gold medal and two silver medals including her second-place finish in the 49 kg snatch category in weightlifting.
Swimmer Abeiku Jackson followed Ntumi’s brilliant performance by finishing second in the Men’s 50 Metre Butterfly event.
Though Ghana’s total medal haul pales in comparison to that of Nigeria (eight medals), Senegal (six medals) and Madagascar (seven medals), none of the aforementioned nations has won a gold medal.
Egypt leads the medal table with South Africa and Algeria ranked second and third respectively; Egypt has won 50 medals including 31 gold medals with South Africa winning 23 medals including seven gold medals.
