A 13-year-old girl has lost her life in a school bus accident at Kwabedu in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality in the Eastern Region.
The gruesome accident occurred on Friday, March 1, 2024, when she was walking to school.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to reporters said the accident involved a Tata school bus with about 33 pupils and teachers onboard.
They narrated that the bus was transporting the pupils to school at Kwabedu from Tarkwa around 6 am when a taxi overtook another vehicle and nearly crashed into it.
To avoid a head-on collision, the bus driver swerved from the road and landed in the ditch.
The bus, unfortunately, landed on the 13-year-old victim who was passing by, trapping her in the pit.
Onlookers quickly rushed to rescue the 13-year-old and the others on the bus and rushed them to the Goldfields and Tarkwa Municipal hospitals.
However, the 13-year-old girl was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body has been deposited at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
Meanwhile, the passengers on the bus sustained injuries and have since been treated and discharged.
Ghana has seen several heartbreaking school bus accidents in recent times.
A Nissan Patrol vehicle said to be the official vehicle of the District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti Region, Prince Karikari, is said to have crashed into their Hyundai minibus.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus driver was in the process of making an unapproved U-turn when the DCE’s vehicle crashed into the bus.
There were 16 passengers on the bus, including the driver and a teacher.
Three boys and the teacher were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Holy Family Hospital at Nkwakaw.
Two of the victims also died the following day.
