A total of 118 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general election have thrown their weight behind former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential primaries, declaring him the strongest and most electable contender.

At a press conference on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the group said their endorsement followed a careful assessment of all aspirants, stressing that Dr Bawumia stood out in terms of experience, competence, vision, and leadership.

Leading the group, former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, told journalists that while several aspirants had impressive track records in business, governance, and policy, none matched Dr Bawumia’s overall credentials.

“We have followed the campaigns of all these fine gentlemen within our party. However, when the critical qualities required to lead the NPP into the 2028 election are considered together, we are convinced that none compares to the pedigree, experience, competence, vision, bold ideas, humility, and compassion that Dr Bawumia represents,” he said.

Mr Egyapa Mercer described the former Vice President as “the most prepared, formidable, and winnable candidate” to lead the NPP into the next general election.

The group also rejected claims that their endorsement was influenced by inducement or pressure, insisting the decision was voluntary and motivated solely by the best interests of the party and the nation.

“Our personal ambitions are irrelevant to this decision. Whether or not parliamentary primaries have been held does not affect our collective resolve to support Dr Bawumia,” he added.

He further assured the public that no member of the group had been coerced or induced, urging Ghanaians to disregard any claims suggesting otherwise.
