Asante Kotoko appoint former Black Stars coach Mariano Barreto
Asante Kotoko SC have appointed former Black Stars trainer Mariano Barretto Jeronimo as the club’s new head coach with immediate effect.
The 64 year old Portuguese takes over from coaches Abdul Gazele and Johnson Smith, who were in charge on interim basis following the dismissal of coach Maxwell Konadu in December 2020.
The club made the official announcement on their various social media platforms.

Barreto was Black Stars Head Coach between 2003 and 2004, and was in charge of Ghana’s Black Meteors, during their last Olympic campaign in 2004.
He was also in charge of the Ethiopian national team between April 2014 and March 2015.
Barreto’s last job was with Lithuanian giants FC Stumbras and has handled several other clubs in Europe and in the Asia.
He is expected to champion the Porcupine Warriors quest to win the 2020/21 GPL title when the second round of the league starts.
They currently sit 4th on the table with 27 points.
