113-year ‘oldest’ woman in Spain recovers from coronavirus

A 113-year-old woman, Maria Branyas, has defeated the deadly coronavirus to become the oldest person in Spain to overcome the virus.

Spain has the second-highest number of coronavirus infections of 269,520 with 26,920 deaths, with Ms Branyas being one of the 180,470 recoveries as of Wednesday, May 5.

Ms Branyas acquired COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, in March when Spain imposed a lockdown when cases spiked, the BBC reported.

With mild symptoms, the woman was able to regain her healthfully after weeks in isolation. She was managed at home in Olot, a town in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain.

“Now that she is well, she is wonderful, she wants to speak, to explain, to make her reflections, it is her again,” her daughter said in a tweet.

This implies that the woman has survived major pandemics, including the flu pandemic of 1918-19, and the coronavirus that has infected 4,358,193 with 1,611,667 recoveries and 293,232 deaths worldwide as of May 5 with no end in sight.

She moved to the Catalan region during the First World War with her father who was a journalist. She was born in Mexico in 1907 and lived in San Francisco before relocating to Spain.

She raised three children – one of whom recently turned 86 – has 11 grandchildren – the oldest of whom is 60 – and 13 great-grandchildren; the BBC added.
