The Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate has said that 1,086 persons have died in road crashes between January to June 2023.
This represents a significant reduction compared to the same period in 2022, during which 1,300 people died in road accidents.
Greater Accra still tops the chart with a record of 231 deaths, followed by Eastern with 196, Ashanti with 194 deaths, Central with 86 deaths, and Bono East with 71 deaths.
Also, the number of injured persons for the months under review is 7,807, which is lower than the 8,007 injuries recorded in 2022.
For the injuries, Ashanti Region stands tall with 2,014, followed by Greater Accra (1,676), Eastern (1,527), Central (950) and Western (380).
A total of 1,205 pedestrians were knocked down from January to June 2023. This represents a decrease of 11.14% over the situation for the same period in 2022 (1,356 knockdowns).
According to the MTTD, the June report indicates overall road safety improvements, with reductions in most major indicators.
However, there has been an alarming increase of 16.25% in the number of persons killed during this period.
Additionally, the report points out the consistent decline in the number of private vehicles involved in crashes.
The MTTD said private vehicles had shown an increasing trend in crash involvement compared to commercial cars and motorcycles.
This positive change in private vehicle crash involvement indicates that road safety measures are proving effective in curbing accidents involving this category of vehicles.
