One person has been reported dead in the recent flood at Mankango in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

A resident of Makango, Issah Ibrahim, who confirmed the death of one person, said three persons got drowned but residents were able to rescue two.

The recent heavy rains has resulted in the overflow of the Black Volta, causing havoc in some parts of the Savannah Region.

The flood has greatly affected some parts of the Northern sector, including Makango, Abelekura, Titikura and other communities in the East Gonja Municipality, with houses and farmlands being submerged in flood waters.

The East Gonja Municipal Chief Executive, Richard Broni, during a tour of the affected communities in the Makango area and its surroundings disclosed that about 3,300 people have been displaced, with about 792 houses affected in the flooding.

He called on government, organisations and philanthropists to come to the aid of the affected people.

“Since we are gathering data, we will communicate it to national to see how we can get some support from government and organisations for the affected people. This is a disaster and we cannot leave the people in this situation alone, so I am appealing to organisations, philanthropists and individuals to come to their aid,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has called on residents of Makango and its surroundings to move to higher ground.
