Two devastating truck accidents in the early hours of Wednesday resulted in the death of a driver’s mate and injuries to three others.

Assistant Division Officer (ADO) Alex King Nartey from the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the incidents and stated that the first accident happened at Anyaa Last Stop.

A truck transporting soft drinks from Agyen Kotoku to Tarkwa overturned, claiming the life of a driver’s mate, aged 30, on his first day of work.

“We learnt it was the mate’s first day on the job. He is in his 30s. He was being rushed to the hospital in another truck but personnel from the Ambulance Service swiftly moved in and he was confirmed dead,” he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a pickup crossed the truck, prompting the driver to swerve.

The truck climbed a nearby pavement and overturned, crushing the mate.

Assistant Division Officer Alex King Nartey expressed concern over bystanders prioritizing salvaging soft drinks over helping victims.

The second accident happened at the Ofankor-Achimota stretch where a banana truck overturned, injuring three: a driver, a mate and a female passenger.

“Firefighters cooled the truck to avert any possible explosion due to heating and while we were concerned about the safety of bystanders, people were busily rushing for the drinks. Police and Fire personnel did our best to control the crowd but they outnumbered us,” he lamented.

The accident blocked the main road, and investigations are ongoing to determine its cause.
