$1.4bn needed to complete Agenda 111 project—Omane Boamah

Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has questioned the status of the Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He asserts that none of the facilities are operational, despite the substantial resources allocated to the initiative.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, January 4, 2025, Dr. Boamah disclosed that an estimated $1.4 billion is required to complete the projects that were launched to address Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure deficits.

The criticism comes in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered on Friday, January 3, 2025.

In his speech, the President lauded Agenda 111 as a transformative project aimed at bolstering healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, Agenda 111 was envisioned to construct 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric facilities.

However, despite initial progress, most of the projects remain incomplete as President Akufo-Addo’s tenure nears its end.

The outgoing president expressed hope that his successor, President-elect John Dramani Mahama, would prioritise the completion of these hospitals to fulfil their intended impact on healthcare accessibility.

Dr. Boamah, however, criticised the initiative’s implementation, emphasising delays and resource gaps.

“None of the Agenda 111 hospitals is functioning. Uncompleted! US$1.4billion needed to complete,” he wrote.

The ambitious programme has faced hurdles, including funding shortfalls and construction delays, leaving many Ghanaians questioning its future.

Despite these challenges, proponents argue that, if completed, the hospitals could revolutionise healthcare delivery across the country.

As the incoming administration prepares to assume office, the focus now shifts to whether Agenda 111 will receive the attention and resources needed to reach its full potential.
